longitude of the ascending node (symbol W)

One of the principal orbital elements used to describe mathematically the shape and orientation in space of an orbit. It gives the point where the orbit intersects the reference plane as the object travels from south to north. For bodies orbiting the Sun, the reference plane is the ecliptic and the zero point is the First Point of Aries (the vernal equinox).
